We’re taking financial literacy into the communities we serve. Now entering its 3rd year, our program for Worcester public high school students is teaching the basics of good finance management, from borrowing for college to balancing checkbooks, budgeting and using credit cards wisely.

Financial Literacy

The Treasury Department and Congress have indicated that a lack of financial literacy is a significant issue in the United States and have established financial literacy month annually in April. ASA strongly advocates developing a financial literacy program that is available as an elective course to all students attending secondary or postsecondary institutions. Such programs would assist students in achieving a level of financial literacy necessary to succeed.

Additionally, the Government Accountability Office has recommended that the Financial Literacy and Education Commission expand its efforts to cultivate sustainable partnerships with nonprofit and private entities. We believe financial literacy education is a crucial element of our mission to help students manage education debt, and would welcome the opportunity to work with federal and state agencies to further the nation’s financial literacy goals.
